About Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple Bangalore

Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple Bangalore is an ancient cave temple in Karnataka, India. It is located in Hulimavu, Bannerghatta Road. The temple is well-known for a remarkable and nearly mystical occurrence that takes place every year on a specific day in January. Apart from being a spectacular natural beauty, the temple is also a stunning example of Indian rock-cut architecture.

Gavipuram Cave Temple is the name of the temple. It honors Lord Shiva, a Hindu god. As there is the presence of two massive discs in the foreground of the shrine, the temple stands out above all other Karnataka temples. The temple contains a large Shivalinga in the inner shrine.

The presence of a unique idol of Agni, the God of fire, is another prominent attraction at the temple. Two heads, seven hands, and three legs are included in the figure. This may be the only such idol in South India. Nandi, Shiva's mount, is depicted beautifully at the temple. On the left side of the temple's main entrance, a stunning depiction of Shakti Ganapathi with 12 hands can be found. Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple timings are very suitable for anyone to visit at any time.

History

The Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple History dates back to the 9th century and has a long history. In the 9th century, the temple is said to have been carved out of a rock. It was used to execute penance by the great sage Gowthama. Kempegowda I, Bangalore's founder, renovated and expanded the temple later in the 16th century.

Kempegowda was imprisoned by Rama Raya, according to local tradition. A five-year sentence was imposed on him. To express his thanks after being liberated, he built this temple. The Karnataka Ancient and Historical Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1961 has designated the temple as a protected structure. A picture by British artist James Hunter from 1792 depicts the temple artistically.

Architecture

The Gavipuram Cave Temple is a work of art in and of itself. The temple was carved out of a monolithic rock. The temple's inner sanctum is housed within a cave carved out of the rock. The granite pillars in the forecourt of the temple are the temple's principal attraction. Huge discs representing the sun and moon are supported by two of the pillars. The other two pillars include a trident (Trishul) and a two-headed drum (damru), which represent Lord Shiva's two most important belongings.
