History


The fort was built by a Rajput ruler named Raja Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. The fort is built on the Trikuta hills in the lap of the Thar Desert and stands tall as an epitome of dominance and power that the Rajput royals hold. The Jaisalmer Fort is also known as the Sonar Quila and is the second-oldest Fort in the state. This fort has fought a lot of battles, heard many war cries, and seen a lot of its residents getting beheaded yet it carries an old-school charm, grace, and positivity. 

The fort has played a huge role in the history of the country because it was used as a trade route from the 16th to the 18th century. The fort was invaded by Alauddin Khilji the ruler of the Khilji Dynasty and operated under the Mughal rule till 1762. Later it was captured by Maharawal Mulraj. A treaty was signed between the British company and Mulraj that was brought into implementation immediately, it was done to retain control of the majestic fort and protect it from any invasion in the future.
 

Architecture


The Jaisalmer Fort is an architectural marvel that stands tall in all its glory, surrounded by the Thar Desert. There are portions of the fort that scream Rajputana because they have intriguing designs and patterns. The fort was very thoughtfully constructed keeping in mind its geographic location. It has three thick and durable layers of walls to keep it safe from invasions. It acted as armor back then and was used by the defending warriors. 

The architecture of the Jaisalmer Fort is unique in itself as it is an amalgamation of the Rajput and Islamic styles of architecture. Thus the fort showcases designs from both cultures. The fort is a 230m wide and 460m long structure built using yellow sandstones that is easy on the eye. The fort turns golden when it is caressed by the sunrays. There are four grand entrance gates for the Sonar Quila and are named as follows Suraj Pol, Ganesh Pol, Akshaya Pol, and Hawa Pol.

This fort mostly offers sightseeing as an activity, one can click pictures while they explore the palace. Some of the places you must not miss out on while visiting the Jaisalmer Fort are:

  • Reach the highest point of the hill and enjoy the stunning views of the fort surroundings.
  • Interact with the locals residing in the fort and get to hear the stories of how their ancestors used to live in those golden days. 
  • Visit the Jain temples and Laxminath temple because these ancient temples have something in them that will make you feel recharged instantly. The Jaisalmer fort timings for visiting Jain temples are from 8 am- 12 pm.
  • If you are patient and love to see how sunlight plays with the color of the fort then you can stay in the fort all day and notice the change in the color of the walls. 
  • You can also walk down the narrow historic lanes and click pictures of the various frames that come your way. 
  • Try eating street food from various corners, eat the Mirchi bada from one shop, hop and skip your way to the other eatery to taste bread pakoda. This way you will get an idea of the stall that serves the best tea and breakfast.

  • Carry around light bags as they will be easy to move around.
  • Avoid visiting the city in summer and if anyhow you end up visiting the city during summers then keep yourself hydrated and well protected from the sun.
  • Enjoy like a kid and revisit your childhood days while you spend some time at the sand dunes. 
  • Wear comfortable shoes however while visiting sand dunes it is advised to wear comfy flip flops.

The best time to visit the city, as well as the fort, is from October to March. The Jaisalmer fort is located in the laps of the Thar desert and it will be preferable if you visit it at a time when you can explore the fort without facing any hurdles.
