Lamgau Caves

About Lamgau Caves Goa

Among various other tourist spots in Goa that can not be missed are the caves at Lamgau. These beautiful caves are on the visiting list of almost every tourist who is fond of caves. There are two ways in which Lamgau caves Goa can be approached. The Lamgau caves location is very adventurous to travel to.

The very first is taking the road through the Lamgau village itself, and a quite stunning trek along the base of the hill. The second one is way easier, you are supposed to drive through Bicholim on the road towards Mapusa. Keep on following the directions of the Pandava caves, which is a path through some paddy fields that leads to two rock-cut caves of Buddhist origin.

The small one which is nearest to Lamgau is quite artistic in design. A distant view of the caves is nearly impossible due to the growth of areca palms all around the area. A small stream also adds to the silent atmosphere near the cave.

Inside this amazing cave, there is a magnificent stone Linga installed with a tulsi Vrindavan and a small but beautiful image of Nandi Bull is present in the simple courtyard. The other cave is much more spacious is mostly used as a shelter against the heavy monsoon rains and is very deep with a complicated passage. Just above the cave, there is some huge cast iron ore mines present whose odd rumbling reminds one of the other sides of Bicholim town. The presence of delightful temples and villages makes the journey more interesting all along the way to Mapusa.

An interesting temple dedicated to Lord Ravalnath is located at Mulago. It is very ironic and amazing at the very same time that one can ding two beautiful temples near Assonora right after crossing the Bicholim into Bardez Taluka.

History

The word Lamgau simply means the village of Buddhist Monks. The historical lamgau caves Goa used to be the inhabitation of Buddhists Monks who came here to live the life of a Monk inside these rock-cut caves. Years ago, Lamgau was popularly known as Lamhagram, and the place was heavily used for mining thereby forming caves.

The design of the caves gives a reason to believe that once upon a time there was a large presence of Buddhist people here. In older times people of Bacholim and nearby areas used to collect water for their needs from the lots of springs that are present even today. These springs were used by Buddhists residents for drinking purposes, but now the residents use them for washing utensils and clothes.

The natural beauty of this place was more eye-catching and surreal as compared to now. Nowtime, only the architectural design of the caves is the main beauty in the surroundings. The uncontrolled mining in the Lamgau area has heavily affected the natural beauty of this whole region.

Apart from all such setbacks, the place is still among the favorite destinations of tourists from all over the country. The state government has taken charge to upgrade the place and refine its beautiful features to make it look more attractive tourists spot.

Goa is not only on the travel list of Indians but also on people from around the world. The large Buddhist touch to this place makes it a favorite place to visit for people of Japan and many countries from the South East Asia region.

Architecture

Red Lateritic soil is used for the crafting of the caves, which makes it not so strong and this is the main reason why the caves have been left incomplete. These caves largely have a Buddhist background, but a Shiv Lingam is also present which is crafted out of stone. Local people worship the Lingam every day.
