Nishat Bagh Srinagar is a terraced Mughal Garden that is built on the eastern side of Dal Lake in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The Bagh is the second largest Mughal garden in the Kashmir Valley. ‘Nishat Bagh’ is an Urdu word, which translates as “Garden of Joy,” and is truly a serene place to spend some time closer to nature. With the backdrop of the Zabarwan Mountains, Nishat Bagh is a garden of bliss that commands a majestic view of the lake. The distance from Srinagar to Nishat bagh is 13.1 km and takes around 30-35 minutes if covered by car or bus.

The Nishat bagh history dates back to when it was built in 1633 by Asif Khan, the elder brother of Nur Jehan. Shah Jahan is said to have beheld this garden by ordering the closure of the water supply to the garden, out of jealousy. Moreover, the  Mughal Princess Zuhra Begum was the daughter of Mughal Emperor Alamgir II and granddaughter of Emperor Jahandar Shah who was buried in the garden. This garden is an architectural marvel and is a must-visit on your trip to Srinagar.

History


When Shah Jahan saw this garden, he expressed great appreciation for its beauty. It is believed that Shah Jahan wished for the garden to be gifted to him by his father-in-law Asif Khan. However, when no such offer was made by Asif Khan, Shah Jahan ordered the closure of the water supply to the garden out of jealousy and anger. Hence, for some time the garden was said to have been deserted. The garden is said to be the burial place of the Mughal Princess Zuhra Begum the daughter of Mughal Emperor Alamgir II and granddaughter of Emperor Jahandar Shah.

Architecture


Nishat Bagh is laid out now like a broad cascade of terraces lined with avenues of trees, The bagh is rising from the edge of the Dal Lake, and has twelve 12 terraces representing twelve Zodiacal signs. The bagh is divided into two sections namely the public garden and the private garden. There is a  central canal, which runs through the garden and has a water depth of 20 centimeters.

Best time to visit


The best months to visit Srinagar is between April to June. The weather is cool and temperatures range between 10 degrees Celcius and 30 degrees. However, the winter season remains a bit chilly with temperatures going down to 1-degree celsius. So, plan your visit according to the temperature of the season.

Getting In srinagar

BY AIR

The nearest airport is Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar. The airport has good flight connectivity from major cities and is located just 24 km from the lake. One can hire a cab, or take a bus to reach the bagh from the airport.

BY ROAD

Srinagar and Jammu are very well connected to other nearby cities by road. The road to the lake has frequent buses that are travelling to and from neighboring cities and other towns. One can take a bus from the Lal Chowk bus stop which is just 11 km away from the Bagh.

BY RAIL

The Srinagar Railway Station is located just 21 km away and regular trains are coming from neighborhoods and other far places in the country. The road between the railway station and the bagh is regularly frequented by the local buses and alternatively, visitors can even hire a cab to reach.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
